Doel, Written on the Walls
A December day in Doel, the Flemish village on the Scheldt that the Port of Antwerp condemned and never quite finished erasing. Its people fought the bulldozers; while the case dragged on, the empty houses filled with paint — murals, slogans, faces pressed into the dust of the windows, KILL THE STATE across a garage door. Behind the old Scheldemolen windmill, the cooling towers of the nuclear plant still steam. A town kept alive by the people who came to mark it.
Grey Scheldt light, spray-paint colour and slow ruin; defiant.
