Every photograph is a place I can return to.
Almost every photograph I’ve made in twenty-five years, I can still walk into. Cuba puts me back on the streets of Havana. A road in the USA brings back an epic drive. A temple or a sea returns me to Indonesia or Thailand — and to gratitude for what I’ve been able to see.
I recognise a tree in the dunes among thousands, because once I photographed it. I see patterns. I make compositions from the heart, and I make them the same way every time.
Photography is how I stay present in a moment. It is also how I remember it.
